Paris Saint-Germain will take on Bayern Munich while Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League following Monday’s draw.

Those four clubs along with Manchester City are arguably the top five favourites for the European crown but the draw has not been kind.

Liverpool and Real met in last season’s Champions League final, along with the decider in 2018.

PSG and Liverpool both finished second in their respective groups, opening up the possibility of glamour last-16 fixtures.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: “The first thing that we can say about this draw is it is proper Champions League. This is a tie that speaks for itself and one that we should all be excited about.

“Real’s European record is the best around. We know this. But we also know that ours is not too bad. On top of this, we know that we have Anfield and everyone knows what this means.”

Real head coach Carlo Ancelotti added: “It’ll be a very entertaining tie and a very tough one. There’ll be a great atmosphere at Anfield and also at the Bernabeu. Itll be a spectacular tie.”

French champions PSG and German champions Bayern faced off in the 2020 decider when the German secured their sixth European crown.

PSG director Luis Campos said: “We take on a big club, a big team. We are proud to be there. We have to take advantage of playing against a great team and show that we have one of the best teams in the world at the moment. We’re confident and happy to be playing this kind of game.”

Man City have drawn RB Leipzig, while Chelsea are up against Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham face Italian champions AC Milan.

Inter Milan will meet FC Porto, Napoli take on Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica battle surprise last-16 qualifiers Club Brugge.

There was more drama in the Europa League draw with Manchester United pitted against Barcelona, following their third-place finish in their Champions League group.

Barca boss Xavi said: “It’s a massive challenge for us. Manchester United are a historic club and they also need to win.

“Our players will probably be more motivated against a strong team and we will have to compete, going to Manchester against a top rival and a historic side that has improved a lot with the arrival of (Erik) ten Hag, with great individual players. We are two big teams and it’s going to be a massive tie.”
