The 69-year-old’s interest in the club comes after a report that stated that the Glazer family was considering selling a minority stake in the club.
A spokesperson for Ratcliff said, “If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer.”
“If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.”
The team has not had much luck this year. At present, they are at the bottom of the Premier League with top player Cristiano Rolando reportedly wanting out.
This has been connected back to the Glazers and their apparent lack of interest in the team. Manchester has been struggling since the resignation of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. They have not won a trophy since 2017 despite being 20-time English champions.
There have also been protests against the Glazers. One of the most recent ones was in May 2021. It is reported that United fans are going to stage another protest against the family on Monday.
Ratcliffe is a childhood fan of the club. It is successful in getting his hands on United, he will be adding them to his other properties including French club Nice and Swiss Club Lausanne-Sport.
“This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent,” the spokesperson added.
“Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.”
This is also not the first time that Ratcliffe tried to buy an English club. He had unsuccessfully placed a bid for Chelsea. Earlier, Elon Musk had joked that he was interested in buying United.
