Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has endorsed UEFA Champions League winner Karim Benzema for this seasons top football award.

Benzema helped Real Madrid win the Champions League on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool, having already clinched the Spanish La Liga title emphatically.

The 34-year-old France international netted 44 goals with 15 assists in all competitions for Real.

Benzema is the hot favourite for the award known as the Best FIFA Men’s Player which will be announced in October, voted by media, national team coaches and national team captains along with the general public.

“There are no doubts; it’s very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up victorious in the Champions League,” Messi said on Argentine television.

“He was fundamental in all the matches from the Round of 16 onwards. I think there is no doubt this year.”

Benzema netted hat-tricks against both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Messi, who plays for PSG, also remarked that he didn’t think Real were the both team in Europe this season.

“The Real Madrid game killed us, me and everyone in the dressing room. We had a lot of hope. It makes me want to win again,” Messi said.

“But the best team doesn’t always win the Champions League. I don’t take credit away from Real Madrid; they weren’t the best in this competition and yet they beat everyone.”
