Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says his outstanding performance in Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final was fuelled by a lack of respect for him.

Courtois made a host of key saves as Real got past Liverpool 1-0 to lift their 14th European crown.

Liverpool had 24-4 shots, with nine on target compared to Real’s two but they could not get past the Belgian shot-stopper, who was on Chelsea’s books from 2011 to 2018.

“Today I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work to put respect on my name as I don’t think I get enough respect, especially in England,” Courtois told BT Sport.

“I saw a lot of criticism even after a great season. I am really proud of the team. We stuck to it and when I needed to be there I was there for the team.”

Courtois made 128 Premier League appearances for the Blues before joining Real in 2018, keeping 48 clean sheets and winning two league titles.

The goalkeeper was voted the Player of the Match for the final and earned praise from head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who re-joined the club prior to this season.

“Coming back to Madrid has been a great success and in truth, I’m not thinking about the trophies that I’ve won,” he said.

“I’ve told Courtois that I’d get him to the final, but that hed then have to go and win the final and he’s done that. You can’t say no to Real Madrid.”

Ancelotti also hailed Vinicius Junior who capped a breakout season with the winner.

“The only thing I’ve helped Vini Jr. with has been his confidence,” he said.

“He’s improved in terms of his finishing and the rest of his game remains the same, such as his dribbling. He’s very efficient in that department. You need to take your time and keep a cool head.

“Benzema has helped him out, as has the confidence he’s been given by Madrid. Today’s goal was the icing on the cake and it’s the best possible way to round off the season.”
