AC Milan made a major move with Sunday’s 1-0 win over Sampdoria, courtesy of Rafael Leao’s early goal, catapulting them into top spot after Napoli and Internazionale had drawn 1-1 on Saturday.

Fourth-placed Juventus stayed behind the lead trio after a 1-1 draw with fifth-placed Atalanta, with boss Massimiliano Allegri insisting they are out of the title race. Lazio moved above AS Roma into sixth with a 3-0 home win over Bologna, while Jose Mourinho’s side drew 2-2 at Sassuolo. Struggling Venezia boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win at Torino.

Bayer Leverkusen got past Stuttgart 4-2 to stay in touch, while RB Leipzig moved into the top four for the first time this season after a 3-1 home win over FC Koln, who had been climbing too. Leipzig moved above the beaten Koln and Union, as well as Freiburg who could only manage a 1-1 home draw with Mainz. Bottom club Greuther Furth made it two wins in three games with Branimir Hrgota’s brace helping them past Hertha Berlin 2-1.

Chelsea and Arsenal were not in action due to the Blues competing at the Club World Cup. West Ham held fourth with their 2-2 draw against Leicester City while Manchester United are up to fifth aided by a five-game unbeaten run despite a 1-1 home draw with Southampton. Tottenham fell off the pace after their third straight loss, going down 2-0 at home to Wolverhampton.
