Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he avoided all the noise this week about his job before his side responded with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Tottenham on Saturday.

The Red Devils manager was under intense pressure after United lost 5-0 at home to Liverpool following a 4-2 defeat to Leicester City which saw the side slip down to seventh spot on the Premier League table.

But United hit back with the win at Spurs, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored prior to half-time before assisting Edinson Cavani in the 64th minute. Marcus Rashford added a third goal to ease the pressure on the Norwegian.

“I’ve stayed away from most of the noise. You know what’s happening out there,” Solskjaer told reporters after the Spurs game.

“You know you have to put a performance out. Every time you lose a game its the worst feeling. You just want the next game.

“We needed a week to put in this performance. It was important to work on fitness, mentality and we changed the tactics. Its nice to have four days to do that.”

United’s pressure-easing win comes amid several shock results as Manchester City were beaten 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace, while Liverpool blew an early two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home with Brighton.

City boss Pep Guardiola said: “We didn’t lose because of (Aymeric Laporte’s red card)… The players showed character and tried, but unfortunately many, many things went wrong and we lost the game.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp added: “It feels like a defeat even though I know its not a defeat. It is a deserved point for Brighton, obviously, for different reasons.”

Chelsea were the big winners from Saturday’s games, triumphing 3-0 at Newcastle after a second-half double from Reece James and Jorginho penalty. The Blues are now three points clear at the top.
