Champions Bayern flexed their muscle against second-placed Bayer Leverkusen with a 5-1 hammering on Sunday, racing to a five-goal lead before half-time after doubles from Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.

Borussia Dortmund moved up to second with Erling Haaland returning from injury to score a brace in a 3-1 win over FSV Mainz. Surprise packets SC Freiburg drew 1-1 with RB Leipzig to remain fourth, while Union Berlin climbed up to fifth with a 2-0 home win over Wolfsburg, who they displaced. Greuther Furth remain last, after a 1-0 loss to Bochum, meaning they have lost six in a row.

England’s top three all won over the weekend, while Manchester United’s 4-2 loss at Leicester City left them without a win in three and dropping down to sixth. Tottenham claimed a 3-2 win at Newcastle on Sunday, with Harry Kane finally scoring, to move up into the top five.

Liverpool were the most impressive of the top three, dismantling Watford 5-0 with Roberto Firmino netting a hat-trick while Mohamed Salah continued to dazzle. Romelu Lukaku failed to score again but Chelsea won 1-0 at Brentford, while Man City eased past Burnley 2-0 at home. Brighton’s third straight draw saw them move into the top four.

Real Sociedad have been among the top 10 in Spain’s elite in recent seasons and rose into top spot with Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Real Mallorca, capitalising on re-scheduled games for both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid with their swathe of South American players who arrived back late after World Cup qualifiers.

AC Milan kept up the pressure, fighting back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 over Verona, while Inter Milan lost ground on the top two with a 3-1 loss to Lazio, who move up to fifth.

Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma went down 1-0 to Juventus, who have claimed four consecutive victories to move up to seventh. Atalanta found some form with a 4-1 win at Empoli. Joao Pedro scored a double as struggling Cagliari claimed their first win of the season, 3-1 over Sampdoria, to move out of bottom spot.

Trabzonspor, who have not won a league title in 37 years, defeated Fenerbahce 3-1 on Sunday to claim the lead in the Super Lig. Anastasios Bakasetas hit a double to lift Trabzonspor, with the victory made more significant after third-placed Besiktas lost 3-2 to Istanbul Basaksehir on Friday night. Galatasaray got past Konyaspor 1-0 to move up to fifth.
