Reports emerged earlier this week that Real had made a transfer offer for 22-year-old Mbappe, who is yet to re-commit to PSG beyond his current contract which expires in mid-2022.
Leonardo confirmed those reports but said the offer was well below PSG’s expectations to sell the France international who they permanently signed from Monaco in 2018 for around 150m euros.
“We do not consider the bid to be enough. I am not going to confirm figures, but it is around 160m euros,” Leonardo told reporters.
“It is less than what we paid for him but it’s more than that. It’s the way it’s been done, it’s disrespectful.
“We have done everything for Mbappe to stay with us and with a week to go we are not going to change the plan. Kylian is the centre of the project, but he is not above it.
“But if he stays or goes, it will always be on our terms. If he wants to leave he will leave, but on our terms like any other player. We can’t change the plan a week before the market closes. If a player wants to go, he will go, but on our terms.”
Leonardo said he believes Real have strategically made a move for Mbappe one week prior to the end of the transfer window.
“For me this seems to me to be a strategy of Real Madrid, to have one of our players,” he said.
“For two years now, Madrid has been behaving in a way that is not correct, illegal, contacting his entourage… unacceptable, not correct at all towards us.
“And the proof of that strategy is to present an offer seven days before the end of the transfer window and one year before the end of his contract and it seems to be a strategy to give the impression that they have tried everything.
“We are not considering the fee, which is far below what we expected, and we are not going to sell a player for less than what we paid for him at the age of 18. We have to give an outstanding sum to Monaco and the offer is not enough for us.”
Le Parisien is reporting that PSG will only sell Mbappe at a fee of 220m euros, while L’Equipe claims it could surpass that.
