Benfica scored two second-half goals to claim a major advantage with a 2-0 away win over Spartak Moscow in UEFA Champions League qualifying on Wednesday.
Rafa Silva put the Portuguese runners-up ahead in the 50th minute before Gilberto added a second in the 73rd minute.
The 2-0 win offers Benfica a strong advantage ahead of the second leg in Lisbon next Tuesday.
Elsewhere, Hungarian champions Ferencvaros secured a strong 2-0 home win over Slavia Prague.
Slavia’s Ukrainian defender Taras Kacharaba netted an own goal before half-time with Ihor Kharatin doubling Ferencvaros’ lead from the spot early in the second half.
Ernest Muci scored a late equaliser to earn Legia Warsaw a handy 1-1 draw away to Dinamo Zagreb.
Bruno Petkovic put Dinamo ahead on the hour mark but Muci levelled in the 83rd minute.
The winners of the tie will progress to the play-off round, while losers will enter the Europa League draw.
