Spain manager Luis Enrique says Tuesday’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy looms as a clash of styles with both sides bossing possession.

La Roja had 73 per cent possession in their 1-1 draw with Switzerland in the quarter-finals where the triumphed 3-1 on penalties.

Spain also had 68 per cent possession against Croatia in the last 16 but Italy are a side who may deny them that opportunity.

The Azzurri edged Belgium 54-46 per cent on possession in their 2-1 quarter-final victory, as well as Austria in the Round of 16.

“I think that’s one of the main questions really, we are leaders in terms of possession stats but they are also a side that can use the ball and enjoy their football with the ball,” Luis Enrique said.

“I guess that’s the first battle to win. I think that they are very good without the ball as well.

“They’ve shown that at times during the championship, but they are far more comfortable with the ball.

“Our objectives are clear. We need the ball, we want to have it. If we have to play a different game we’ll adapt but of course we’d prefer to have possession.”

Spain have come under criticism for their Euro 2020 campaign, drawing two group games and struggling to break down the Swiss in the quarters.

Luis Enrique insisted they had achieved plenty in their run to the last four but believed they could continue on.

“It’s impossible to over-state this,” he said. “It’s fantastic because we are obviously not an experienced national team.

“Getting the experience of getting through the quarter-finals the way we did, deserving to do so - I did think we deserved to get through before the shootout and that’s obviously hugely important and you can’t over state that.

“What we are doing now is focusing on the game, focusing on the huge opportunity we have, an opportunity to compete in a final, so the squad will have plenty of time to think about it and take stock. But we have a great thing in front of us and we need to be focused 100 per cent.”

Italy, who have won all matches at Euro 2020, are the marginal favourites to win the match and/or progress to the final.
