Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Simon inexplicably miscontrolled a backpass from Pedri allowing Croatia’s opening goal in the 5-3 last-16 win.
La Roja have good depth among their goalkeeper ranks with Manchester United’s David de Gea as well as Robert Sanchez, leaving Kepa Arrizabalaga out of their final squad.
But Enrique referenced Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal when discussing Simon, after impressing against Croatia following his early blunder.
“You don’t have to make yourself a martyr,” Enrique said. “The mistake doesn’t matter; what matters is what you do after the mistake. You have to reflect after the game.
“Nadal says that you have to have the memory of a fish and he’s right. If you lose a ball, there’s no use thinking about that ball, you have to go for the next one.
“That’s what Unai did. (He was) outstanding.”
Enrique admitted he expected a major test against Switzerland who stunned world champions France in the Round of 16.
“They’re going to be a very tough team to face and I think for the spectator there might not be some big names, but they’re a great group of players,” Enrique said.
“They’re a match for us in terms of the way they press, the way they attack, so its going to be very difficult for us.”
Enrique brushed off any concerns about his side’s physical capability ahead of the quarters, having played 120 minutes against Croatia, and had an interrupted lead-up to the tournament due to their COVID-19 issues.
“I have full confidence in all 24 players,” he said. “Physical issues are just as important as mental issues. If somethings not going right mentally, youre perhaps not running so well.”
The Swiss will be without captain Granit Xhaka due to suspension, with boss Vladimir Petkovic calling on his players to remain hungry.
Spain are the clear favourites to progress but also to win in 90 minutes.
