England’s victory sees them progress to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals where they will face Ukraine in Rome.
Substitute Jack Grealish played a key role in turning the game in England’s favour, laying off for Luke Shaw to square to Raheem Sterling who broke the deadlock on 75 minutes.
The Aston Villa playmaker then provided the assist for Kane’s 86th minute header which sealed victory for the Three Lions in front of a boisterous home crowd.
“We have talked about bringing enjoyment to the nation and afternoons like this are what it is about,” England boss Gareth Southgate said.
“The players were absolutely immense, right the way through the team and the fans were as well. Only 40,000, but its as good an atmosphere as I can remember at Wembley.
“We played extremely well. I think we deserved the win, but I’ve had to say to them straight away, ‘look, I’m the party-pooper because if we don’t capitalise on that on Saturday now, then it doesn’t count for anything’.”
Germany boss Joachim Low ends his 15-year tenure, bowing out with a disappointing campaign.
“It was a huge disappointment,” Low said. “We expected more and the belief in the team was there. But in such games you have to take your chances when you get them.
“We had two of those chances with Werner and Muller and so it is bitter to be eliminated now at this stage.”
