Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic won’t be using Ivan Perisic’s absence due to COVID-19 be an excuse ahead of their Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Spain on Monday.

Spain and Croatia in Copenhagen, although the 2018 World Cup runners-up will have to go without their Inter Milan star who scored two goals in the group stage.

Perisic tested positive to COVID-19 on Saturday, although he is the only member of their squad to be ruled out, with all other players returning negative tests.

“Perisic is hard to replace and he’s been our key player in the group stage but this can happen and we have to adapt,” Dalic said.

“Fortunately, we have more options in Perisic’s position than in any other at this tournament so whoever steps in should be able to do a good job.

“Whether it’s Mislav Orsic, Josip Brekalo, Ante Rebic or Andrej Kramaric, we will try to take the game to Spain and prevent them from keeping possession because sitting back will get us nowhere.

“They also like to press high up the field when they don’t have the ball, it’s their style rooted in how Barcelona and Real Madrid play. It’s going to be tough but I am confident that we have it in us to beat them.”

Meanwhile, Spain’s challenges are different, coming off a 5-0 win over Slovakia which has done little to ease the criticism of striker Alvaro Morata who missed a penalty.

Morata has been the subject of abuse, which has also extended to his family, leaving Spain boss Luis Enrique calling for intervention.

“This is bad enough that it has to be put in the hands of the police,” he said. “This is a serious crime.

“Insulting his family is a serious issue that has to be put into the hands of the authorities and dealt with in the strongest possible way. It is his wife and children.”
