Suarez scored a 67th minute winner in Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Valladolid which confirmed their maiden La Liga title since 2013-14.
The Uruguayan forward’s contribution was perfect, having had an outstanding campaign after being told he wasn’t part of Barcelona’s plans in the off-season.
“This has been a hard season for the situation I had to go through, starting the season the way it did, being disrespected (by Barcelona) and having Atletico open its doors to me,” Suarez said.
“I will always be thankful to this great club for that. I have been in football for many years and I think this has been the most difficult year for me.”
Valladolid, who were relegated due to the defeat, had gone ahead in the 18th minute from Oscar Plano’s strike and they held the advantage until the break.
But Atletico responded with Angel Correa equalising in the 57th minute, before Suarez’s 67th minute winner.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone said: “We’ve been able to bring joy for many people who have gone through such difficult times.
“The players have been enormous, I think them so much, above all those who played less, but who made us a team, as we were in every moment.”
Elsewhere, second-placed Real Madrid needing to win to have any hope of the title and scored two goals in the final four minutes to triumph 2-1 over Villarreal.
Yeremi Pino had put the Yellow Submarine ahead in the 20th minute, but Real scored late goals from Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.
