Real Madrid were delat a huge blow on Thursday when it was confirmed that their top striker Ruud van Nistelrooy shall be out for the rest of the season after the club’s doctors said that he needed a surgery on his knee.

Since then a number of strikers around Europe have been linked with a move to the 31 times reigning Spanish champions. The likes of Carlos Tevez of reigning Premier League and European champions Manchester United, Didier Drogba of Chelsea and Hernan Crespo of Inter Milan have been said to be on the radar of Real but so far nothing concrete has materialized.

But now Real coach Bernd Schuster had admitted that they shall certainly sign a key striker in January. Speaking to the Madrid based Spanish sports daily Marca, the former Getafe coach said:

“Now we are trying to see if there is a possibility. If there is, then I am positive that we will take advantage of that.

“Ruud’s injury has not forced our hand, but it has meant that we have to work harder because we’ll be a player short for a long time.

“Although it does not help to have an obligation to sign someone - that was not there before - we are going to see if we can be lucky and bring someone important in.”

Earlier in the season Real’s sporting director Pedrag Mijatovic had declared that Real would make no winter signing. But now it appears that Real have to sign a top draw striker to replace the injured Ruud van Nistelrooy.
