Lille went into Sunday’s fixtures at the summit with a three-point buffer on both Olympique Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain who were to meet in the late kick-off, while the leaders hosted lowly Nimes.
However, Lille lost 2-1 at home to Nimes in their afternoon fixture, offering up the prospect that victory for either Lyon or PSG could see them go top and the Parisians capitalised on the opportunity.
PSG raced away to a four-goal lead in a 4-2 win over Lyon where Kylian Mbappe became the youngest ever player to reach 100 Ligue 1 goals with a brace.
The result now sees PSG ahead of Lille on goal difference, with Lyon back in third three points back, followed by Monaco a further point behind after their 4-0 win over St Etienne on Friday.
“Yes of course, it’s so important to be top of the table and we are still in all three competitions,” PSG boss Pochettino said.
“We are so happy as the performance was really good and of course, we expect the team to keep going in this way in the future.”
PSG winner Angel Di Maria added: “We had lots of chances to retake first place. Today, we had another chance to get there and thanks to a very good performance, we were able to win and climb back up to first place.”
Les Parisiens were drawn against reigning European champions Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in midweek, offering a stern test of their continental ambitions.
Bayern defeated PSG in last season’s Champions League final 1-0, meaning the tie is an opportunity to claim some revenge.
PSG are also into the Coupe de France quarter-finals, having beaten Lille 3-0 last week.
