Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho was responding to an Instagram post by forward Gareth Bale earlier in the week in which he described enjoying a good training session that day.
In practice, the Welshman had not trained on the day in question because he had felt some muscle tightness and had requested a scan. He subsequently missed Spurs FA Cup defeat to Everton and is a doubt for their next match with league leaders Manchester City.
When asked to explain the contradiction, Mourinho hypothesised that perhaps Bale had not even posted the comment himself.
In reality, many high profile sports stars do not post their won content on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Instead, they employ teams of social media experts to produce content on their behalf. If that was the case here, it seems that Bale did not approve first what was sent out in his name.
The 31-year old has not enjoyed the best of seasons on his return to North London.
It was with Tottenham that he made his name as a dynamic forward earning himself a world record transfer, at the time, to Real Madrid in 2013.
Although he has won the Champions League four times during his time in Spain, over the past two years or so, he has featured infrequently for the Spanish side after falling out with manager Zinedine Zidane.
Bale became better known for the time he spent on Spanish golf courses than Reals training ground.
It was hoped that the season -long loan with his former club would help the 31-year old revive his career but it has not worked out as either party had hoped. Here have been injury problems but also concerns over consistency, and he has made just six Premier League appearances, scoring only once.
He seems certain to return to Madrid at the end of the season, where he still has one year left on his contract.
