Deadline Day Wrap: Liverpool Sign Defensive Duo, Arsenal Exits
Schalke's Ozan Kabak, left, and Bayern's Robert Lewandowski vie for the ball during the German Bundesliga soccer match between FC Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich in Gelsenkirchen last week

Reigning English champions Liverpool have completed two deadline day moves to bolster their backline while Arsenal allowed a host of players to leave the club.

Liverpool completed a permanent deal for 25-year-old defender Ben Davies from Preston North End following a medical, while 20-year-old Turkey international Ozan Kabak has also joined.

Kabak signs with the Reds on loan from German club Schalke 04, having previously been the 2018-19 Bundesliga Young Player of the Year and worked under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s close friend David Wagner.

“Hes really a big, big talent and we are really looking forward to working with him,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “Dave always said he will be a future captain of a team. He is a proper personality.”

The double signing gives Klopp additional defensive options, with injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Matip has now been ruled out for the season with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have allowed German defender Shkodran Mustafi to go the opposite way and join struggling Schalke on a permanent deal after almost five years with the Gunners.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “Musti has been a key player for us for a long period of time. He played a very important part in my first season as manager and I’d like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon. Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke.”

The Gunners have also loaned out Ainsley Maitland-Niles to battling Premier League club West Bromwich Albion for the remainder of the season, while talented youngster Joe Willock has joined Newcastle on loan.

Arsenal already signed talented Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid earlier in the transfer window, whilst allowing Mesut Ozil to leave and loaning out Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba to reduce the wage bill.

Teenage Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo joined Brighton & Hove Albion, while American right-back DeAndre Yedlin officially left Newcastle to join Turkish giants Galatasaray on a permanent deal.

Other unconfirmed moves are Takumi Minamino heading out of Liverpool on loan to Southampton, while Bournemouth’s Josh King was expected to sign with Everton.

Meanwhile, Dele Alli will be staying put with Tottenham, despite struggling for regular opportunities under Jose Mourinho this season.
