The Red Devils crushed Leeds United with Scott McTominay netting twice inside the first three minutes, before further goals from Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof extended the margin to 4-0 before half-time.
The result sees United move up to third, within five points of leaders Liverpool with a game in hand, after an excellent recent run of results in the Premier League.
“We’re one third into the season, we’re not even at the halfway point, so the league position is not something we look at,” Solskjaer said when asked about a title challenge.
“We look at the improvement in the team, we look at the improvement in fitness because we knew we were going to be lagging behind in fitness, and I think it showed in the first few games but now, today, I think we showed we are getting a fitter and stronger team.”
Leeds have conceded the most goals in the top flight this season but that didn’t detract for Solskjaer who praised his side’s opening 40 minutes.
“It was a brilliant start. That was fantastic from the first minute,” the Norwegian said.
“We had a plan to get after them, go forwards when we had the ball. Two great goals by Scott. The way we approached the game, of course, we’ve shown them videos and analysed and they were wide-eyed, the boys, when they saw the clips we showed them.
“The spaces that can appear, or not appear if we don’t do the work. They did the work, spot on.”
Meanwhile, two-goal hero McTominay, who also provided an assist, appeared to strain his groin in second-half stoppage-time, forcing United to finish with 10 men.
“Scott, it seemed like a groin issue. I don’t know,” Solskjaer said.
“Hopefully, it won’t be too long as he’s not had any muscle injuries before but I don’t know how quickly he will recover.”
