World champions France have been stunned 2-0 at home by 55th ranked Finland in the pick of Wednesday’s friendly results around Europe.

First-half goals from Brentford forward Marcus Forss, on his Finland debut, and midfielder Onni Valakari set up the win for the Eagle-Owls who were hammered for 72-28% possession and 24-6 shots at Saint Denis.

However, France only mustered three shots on target, equal with Finland’s total, leaving Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps scratching his head ahead of their Nations League encounters with Portugal and Sweden.

Admittedly it was a weakened France line-up for the friendly, but after Marcus Thuram hit the crossbar early, Finland did well to take the lead, capitalising on an error from Moussa Sissoko.

Out of the blue again Valakari fired in a superb left-foot shot into the top corner three minutes later and despite France bringing on Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial and N’Golo Kante in the second half, they couldn’t find a way back.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s under-pressure new signing Donny van de Beek scored for the Netherlands as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Amsterdam.

Michy Batshuayi hit a double as world number one Belgium got past Switzerland 2-1 in Heverlee, while Germany edged Czech Republic 1-0 thanks to Luca Waldschmidt’s early strike.

Denmark beat Sweden 2-0 in Brondby, while 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia could only manage a 3-3 draw away to Turkey.

Vincenzo Grifo netted a brace as Italy defeated Estonia 4-0 in Florence, while Poland knocked off Ukraine 2-0.

On Thursday, England will take on the Republic of Ireland, having had Joe Gomez withdraw from their squad due to injury.
