Edouard Mendy has expressed his delight at joining Chelsea from Rennes in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea have announced on their official website that they have secured the services of the 28-year-old goalkeeper on a five-year contract.

The Senegal international will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for the spot between the posts in manager Frank Lampard’s starting lineup.

According to Goal.com, the former Reims goalkeeper has cost the Blues 22 million in transfer fees.

Mendy is overjoyed to have made the move to Chelsea, and told the club’s official website: “I am so excited to be joining Chelsea.

“It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and cant wait to get started.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has explained the club’s decision to bring in the Senegal international.

Granovskaia said: “As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in. Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.”
