Gillespie was in action for Newcastle in their Carabao Cup first-round tie against Championship club Blackburn at St. James Park.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper started the match for the Premier League game and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Steve Bruces side won 1-0.
The Englishman joined Newcastle on a free transfer earlier this summer following his departure from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell at the end of the last season.
Gillespie has taken to Twitter to revel in playing for Newcastle in a competitive game.
