Earlier this year, David Beckham, the former England captain, and now the owner of the Inter Miami MLS franchise, acquired a substantial stake in a UK-based e-sports company Guild Esports.

And now the company is to list on the London Stock Exchange for the first time with an IPO (Initial Public Offering), in a move which they hope will raise it 20 million in funding.

It will become the first e-sports firm in the country to offer fans the chance to invest in a gaming franchise.

Esports, where spectators watch professional players play video games online, has boomed since lockdown, especially in the absence of live sporting events for fans to watch or attend. In the spring of this year, Newzoo, a market analysis firm estimated that there were 443 million viewers of e-sports at the end of 2019, a figure that they expect to increase to 646 million by the end of 2023.

Nor is esports just a niche activity for gamers anymore. Major e-sports tournaments can offer millions of dollars in prize money and attract wealthy sponsors, whilst the viewership can out-strip audience figures for traditional sporting events like the Tour de France and Wimbledon.

Guild Esports has already announced its intention to enter teams in globally organised games like Fortnite, Rocket League, FIFA, and CS Go.

They also want to copy the Premier League academy system, whereby they will create a stable of up and coming gamers, and train them and equip them with the skills to compete with the best.

When Beckham came on board Guild Esports said that they intended to work with him to harness his global influence and following to help grow their business and strengthen their brand.

Nor is he the only footballer to become involved in e-sports. Earlier this year, Gareth Bale, the current Welsh captain, who plays in Spain for Real Madrid launches his own e-sports venture, called Elevens Esports.
