Swedish veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic will continue to play in Serie A until he’s 39 after signing a one-year contract extension with AC Milan.

The Rossoneri announced the extension until June 30 2021 on Monday night, rewarding Ibrahimovic for his impact with 11 goals after re-joining AC Milan in December following his time in the United States with LA Galaxy.

In a brief statement, Milan wrote: “The Swedish champion began his journey with the Club in 2010 when he made 85 appearances and scored 56 goals during a stint which also yielded one Scudetto and one Supercoppa.

“Ibrahimovic returned to Milan in January this year and contributed significantly to AC Milan’s return to Europe, netting 11 goals in 20 matches, reaching the 100 appearances milestone with the Rossoneri.

“Today, Zlatan Ibrahimovic re-joined his teammates and coach Stefano Pioli at Milanello Sports Center, where he took part in his first training session of the season.”

Clearly the Italian powerhouse see the 38-year-old as a favourite son, given his long-term association with the club despite previous stints with Inter Milan and Juventus.

In the 2019-20 campaign he claim a few records including becoming the oldest player to score 10 or more goals in a Serie A season, while he’s the only player to score 50 goals or more for both Milan clubs.

He managed 10 league goals in 2019-20, with his arrival helping Milan lift up to the table to eventually finish sixth under Stefano Pioli and claim a Europa League spot.

Milan have had a lean decade, having not finished in the top four since the 2012-13 Serie A campaign, while they’ve not been Italian champions since 2010-11 when Ibrahimovic was joint league top scorer.

The Rossoneri have brought in Alexis Saelemaekers, Simon Kjaer and Emil Roback this off-season as they chase a return to Italy’s top four and UEFA Champions League football.
