The Magpies are on the hunt for more firepower up top, especially after Dwight Gayle limped out of their preseason match against Crewe with a suspected knee injury.
No Options
Andy Carroll might be feeling fit and ready to go, but the Geordie is made of glass and won’t play 38 Premier League games this season and won’t be involved for the full 90 minutes.
As for Joelinton, well. The less said about the Brazilian, the better. He’s not even in the country right now, and hasn’t taken part in any preseason.
Wilson
So it seems that Newcastle United have turned their attention to Callum Wilson. The Daily Mail has reported that the Magpies are after the 28-year-old, who would be available for around 20 million pounds - said Football365.
Even though this goes against a few of Newcastle’s key ideas in the transfer market, they need to get this deal done.
Even though Wilson is closer to 30 than 25, they need another striker with a good record in the Premier League and the desire to move up north. With 41 goals and 16 assists in 126 top flight games, Wilson has a fairly decent record and is proven in the league. Plus, he’s not going to want to waste another season of his career in the Championship.
Break The Mold
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley needs to realise that not every deal can be done with the eye on making a profit. If they can sign this forward, break into the top 10 and then solidify their position in the league over the course of his four-year contract, Wilson will have paid for himself.
Another thing to consider is the ownership issue. Saudi Arabia’s bid to buy the club might have been knocked back, but if they can avoid relegation in the next few years and approach something like stability, they will be a lot more attractive to investors.
The chance they can do that without a proper striker is low. Wilson might not be the answer to all these problems, but for just 20 million pounds he can be the answer to this one.
