Really?

While this seems like a fantastic move for Spurs, who need to reinforce that position thanks to the alarming lapses in defensive application shown by Serge Aurier, Wolves are going to be losing someone who is incredible important to the team.

Nuno Espirito Santo barely changes his side, and the omnipotence of Matt Doherty reflects that. He has missed just three league games since May 2017 and has played a mixture of right-back and right midfield.

But he can also cover across at left-back, which is another benefit of having the Irish international in the squad.

Back-up?

As a consequence of his supremacy, Wolves don’t really have a replacement for Doherty in the squad. Luke Matheson is just 17 and has never played above League One standard, Oskar Burr is 22 but has played less than 20 senior games of football in his life and while Conor Coady can cover at right-back, he’s a rock in the heart of defence and Santo would be loath to change that.

Ryan Bennett could play in the position but he just spent the season out on loan to Leicester City and is primarily a central defender.

Rabbit

To lose your first-choice right-back to a side who are battling for the same place in the league as you, without natural cover in the squad, for only 20 million pounds doesn’t seem like the best choice for Wolves.

With three years left to run on his contract, there is no pressing economic need to sell Doherty either.

This news definitely comes as a surprise, but with Wolves’ links to Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes, there’s every reason to believe Santo could pull a rabbit out of the hat in this transfer window. Aided, no doubt, by the man behind so many of the club’s recent dealings.[1]: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/tottenham-transfer-news-matt-doherty-wolves-latest-rumours-gossip-a9690381.html
