Bayern Munich manager Hans-Dieter Flick has hailed Manuel Neuer as the “best goalkeeper in the world” after his heroics as they lifted UEFA Champions League trophy in Lisbon on Sunday night.

German champions Bayern Munich secured the treble with the 1-0 victory over Paris Saint Germain on Sunday thanks to Kingsley Coman’s 59th minute strike, although Neuer had to make several saves to maintain their advantage.

Bayern had 12 shots to PSG’s 10, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria all testing the 34-year-old former Schalke 04 goalkeeper, who lifted the trophy as captain.

“It was a high-tempo, high-octane match with chances at both ends,” Flick said.

“We have the best goalkeeper in the world in Manuel Neuer and he kept us in the match in certain instances.”

Bayern forward Thomas Muller acknowledged Neuer’s contribution too, admitting the match was far from their best performance, with the keeper making up for others’ mistakes.

“Today we also rode our luck and had Manuel Neuer between the sticks,” Muller said.

“How the team started, how we played; It wasn’t our best game, but we hung in there and now we’re on top. We’re actually arguing about who’s going to make up for each others mistakes.”

Despite the challenges in claiming the narrow win, Flick commended his players for their commitment to the cause to the final moment of the decider.

“We really make life difficult for the opposition,” Flick said.

“When you think how we worked defensively until the 92nd minute Lewandowski was chasing after the ball, that was incredible. It was a complete team performance.

“What was great was how the team played as a lot of people wondered how Bayern would defend against their impressive front line. I think we did a very good job on that score. We had a good attitude out there through the team that was great to see.”

The Bayern boss also encouraged his players to celebrate long into the night after the game, having completed another remarkably successful season, which extended beyond expectation in sheer length.

“I haven’t given the team a curfew,” Flick said. “We should celebrate properly, we’ve earned it. A big thank you to the whole team. There are so many people who’ve helped, it belongs to all of them.”

The 2020-21 Bundesliga season commences on Saturday 19 September, although Bayern won’t start until Monday 21 September.
