There are no romantic options, there are no great stories and there are no underdogs for the neutrals to get behind.
Who?
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are elite clubs in their own right. One comes from heritage and old money, the other waxed and waned in relevance before the arrival of Qatar and their oil money.
In one way, PSG are the neutral’s choice because they’ve never won the Champions League before and putting a fresh name on that trophy is always nice. Plus, do we really want Munich to get richer and continue to steamroll the Bundesliga?
Meaning
You could see the emotion on the faces of the PSG players to finally reach the final. For all their domestic might, they have struggled to make their mark on the European stage and winning on Sunday would help finish a chapter of their new ownership. Do Bayern care that much?
On the other hand, Bayern have a slightly worse team and are probably expected to lose. PSG have the rich talents of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe roaming around and they’ll look to take advantage of Hansi Flick’s incredibly high defensive line.
Phil
One story from this final that does capture the imagination in Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian is pretty unwanted across the elite clubs and is certainly fighting for his future. Two goals and one assist against Barcelona put him back in public consciousness as A Good Player - can he do the same on Sunday?
Liverpool will be owed five million pounds if Coutinho wins the Champions League - payable by Barcelona to the Reds, which is another example of the kind of delicious negotiating skills that sporting director Michael Edwards brings to the club.
Paying a fee of that nature of a loan player winning the European cup would hurt for Barcelona.
Tough Choice
This is a game without romance, without the essence that makes us all love football.
So just watch and appreciate the elite players on the field, without putting much weight on who lifts the trophy at the end of it.
