Juventus Clinch Serie A Title
Juventus clinch Serie A title

Juventus have won their ninth successive Serie A title.

Their two nil home victory over Sampdoria on Sunday night was enough to ensure that the Championship trophy will remain in Turin for yet another year, even though there are two rounds of fixtures still to be played.

In fact, although the season has not finished in Italy, there is very little to be played for amongst the competing teams. Inter Milan, Atalanta and Lazio still have to fight for the honour who will finish second, third and fourth, and in what order, whilst Roma, AC Milan and Napoli all know that they are destined to play Europa League football next season.

At the bottom, SPAL and Brescia are already relegated, and Lecce will almost certainly join them, unless they can overhaul a four-point deficit to Genoa in the two remaining games, and a vastly inferior goal difference.

Juventus were once again indebted to Cristiano Ronaldo who set them on their way against Sampdoria, scoring the first goal to bring his individual total for the season to 31 in total. That is probably not enough to win him this seasons Golden Boot in Italy, though, as earlier in the day Lazios Ciro Immobile had scored a hat-trick against Hellas Verona to bring his own haul for the season to 34 goals.

However, it is the first time since 1951 that two men have scored more than 30 goals in a single season. And Immobile needs one more to edge ahead of Bayern Munichs Robert Lewandowski, to become the top scorer in Europe this season.

However, Ronaldo can content himself with another record. He has now scored 734 goals in top-flight football in Portugal, England, Spain, and Italy. That has tied him second on the all-time list with the Brazilian Romario, and he is now just 33 short of the record held by Pele.

(Both Pele and Romario climbed more career goals than that, but many of those came in exhibition games and matches not recognised for official purposes).

Amongst those still playing the game, Ronaldos nearest rival is Lionel Messi who currently has 716.
