Solskjaer: De Gea Should've Saved Second Goal

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declined to publicly criticise goalkeeper David de Gea but admitted he should’ve done better in their 3-1 FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea on Sunday.

Chelsea progressed to the FA Cup decider where they’ll play Arsenal on August 1 with the victory, but de Gea’s performance was the big talking point as his Manchester United future comes under increasing scrutiny.

De Gea’s performances in the 2019-20 campaign have dipped while his understudy Dean Henderson has excelled on loan at Sheffield United in his debut top flight campaign, meaning he could be preferred in 2020-21.

The Spanish goalkeeper was beaten by a deft Olivier Giroud touch on the stroke of half-time, before Mason Mount’s long range effort got past de Gea for the second.

“Obviously everyone has to perform and everyone has a chance every time we play to stake a claim in the team,” Solskjaer said.

“David knows he should have saved the second goal, but that’s done now. We’ve got to move on and look forward to Wednesday.

“It’s hard for a keeper to make amends apart from David making two or three fantastic saves after.

“It’s so much easier for outfield players but David, in the rest of the game, made a few good saves. But he knows he could have saved that one.”

While United were left disappointed, it was a significant win for Chelsea and Frank Lampard in his debut season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard has done an impressive job in 2019-20, lifting the Blues close to clinching a Premier League top three spot and reaching the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, despite transfer restrictions.

If the former England midfielder could claim some silverware, along with finish top four, it would represent a major tick for his maiden year as manager.

“We have finals ahead now,” Lampard said. “Arsenal is one for us, we know that, but before that we have two finals in the league this week.

“Recovery will be huge for us and we will refocus on the league now, but of course it will be a great occasion. Its a London derby against a good side and a chance to win a trophy.”
