David Luiz, bloody hell.

Football was never going to ease us back into it with Arsenal and Manchester City facing off in the first round of fixtures after the COVID-19 break, but this was something else.

David Luiz has never played boring football, but his 25 minute spell really took the biscuit here.

Unhinged

Whether he’s sprinting off on rogue runs, shooting from 35 yards out or missing a simple header inside the box, the Brazilian keeps everyone on their toes - including his own side.

For a man who has struggle to develop a positive reputation as a defender, this was another example of the man taking two steps back.

It was another big moment in which he failed to deliver. In the space of those fateful and fearful 25 minutes, the defender made two mistakes that led to goals and saw red.

Not Enough

Luiz plays with a lot of passion and that gets fans and coaches on his side, but can managers trust the man? He hasn’t got a reputation as a squeaky clean defender and his style of play comes riddles with risks.

When the former Chelsea man plays well, he can fire a team to victory thanks to his impeccable ball playing ability and quiet leadership.

But when he’s unhinged, then it all goes really wrong.

Never Learn

From a coach’s point of view, it must be maddening to see someone in the latter years of their career who stubbornly refuses to learn from his mistakes. After his first, that allowed Raheem Sterling the chance to score, Luiz should have tightened up and played a simple game.

Of course that all went out the window with the tug at Riyad Mahrez, a professional foul that someone with [106.83 million pounds][1] worth of transfer fees under his belt and 500 career appearances should know better than to do.

His story is never going to change, Luiz is too long in the tooth for anything else now. Arsenal will have to embrace the chaos or move him on as quickly as possible.[1]: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-luiz/profil/spieler/46741
