An amateur football club in Northern Ireland could be forced to go out of business unless it raises 8,000 to pay a fine imposed on them by FIFA, the world governing body.

The fine has been levied on TW Braga for breaching the regulations on the signing of foreign players, and minors under the age of 18 years old, when they signed Hasan Ayar, a New-York based teenager.

Chelsea last year were handed a one year transfer ban and fined 340,000 for multiple breaches of the same rule, but they are a Premier League club owned by a Russian multi-billionaire, who could employ top lawyers to fight the case for them (who eventually got the ban and the fine reduced).

By contrast, Braga are a community club, staffed largely by volunteers, who are in it for the love of the game, and who offer an academy system which caters to the local area, as well as for children, able bodied and disabled. Many of those who work there have seen their own livelihoods badly affected by the coronavirus crisis, and now they face a struggle to keep their football club going as well.

They have now started a GoFundMe page to try and raise the money need to pay the fund from crowd funding in order to pay the FIFA fine before their deadline of the end of this week.

There is an added frustration in that FIFAs own laws do not permit clubs to appeal fines of less than CHF 15,000 (12,300).

Braga insists that they were not aware that they had infringed any rules in relation to Hasan, who was able to travel to Northern Ireland on a European passport, because his mother is Lithuanian. FIFA insist though that they should have obtained international; clearance first, something which is normally only required in the case of professional clubs.

Whilst Braga are battling for survival, the player who caused the crisis continues to thrive. Hasan has since moved on to the English Premier League and Sheffield United, where he has already trained with the first team on a number of occasions.
