According to ESPN, the Premier League club have activated the release clause of 49 million pounds in Werner’s contract at Leipzig.
The report has added that the Germany international striker is on the verge of agreeing a five-year contract with the Blues worth 200,000 pounds per week.
Liverpool have also been interested in signing the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window, according to the report, but it is their Premier League rivals Chelsea who seem set to secure the services of the former VfB Stuttgart striker.
The report has added that Chelsea plan to finalise the deal in the coming days.

Werner is one of the best strikers in the world and will enhance the quality of the Chelsea attack.
Tammy Abraham has been leading the line for Frank Lampard’s side this season, but the England international is only 22 years of age and is still developing as a footballer.
The youngster, though, has done well for the London club so far this campaign, scoring 13 goals and provided three assists in the Premier League, and scoring two goals and providing one assist in the Champions League.
However, Werner is a more experienced striker who has been on top form for quite a few years.
The 24-year-old has scored 25 goals and provided seven assists in the Bundesliga for Leipzig so far this season, and scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in the league during the 2018-19 campaign.
