The former footballer and current pundit thinks that the two aren’t a good match, that a ‘winner’ is required. That’s a lazy opinion that does the worst for club’s like Newcastle and their impending fortune.
Want It Now
He said: “Pochettino hasn’t (won), so he needs a club who are a bit like him, which is progressive, on the way up, something thats going to take a bit of time. Newcastle have been talked about, I understand that.
“But if Newcastle’s owners have got that much money and they want success now, would you give it to Pochettino? He’s never won a trophy.”
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) may not have been handed the keys to St. James’ Park just yet, but an announcement on the takeover is getting closer all the time.
Feel Sorry For Him
You’d imagine that poor old Steve Bruce just won’t cut the mustard for the ambitious new owners, and Mauricio Pochettino has been one of the men linked with the hotseat. The former Tottenham Hotspur man built an incredible side while spending very little money, and while any PIF-backed side will probably have more sway in the market, Pochettino will still have to rely on those same old instincts.
He’ll need to build a team, first, not just a collection of highly paid individuals. Newcastle United will want this to be a long-term project, and Poch is one of the finest empire builders in the world.
Newcastle will want more youngsters given a chance, for the Academy to have a revamp, for the training ground to be modernised and used as a point of pride. PIF will look at the job done with Manchester City as an example of a sustainable world domination project and Pochettino fits the bill perfectly.
Builder
Just because he hasn’t won a trophy doesn’t mean he’s not an excellent manager. Murphy seems to think a lack of silverware invalidate his achievements with Spurs, but that’s not the case. Plenty of poor managers have winners’ medals hanging in their houses but it doesn’t mean anything.
If Poch can do what he did at Spurs, backed by Saudi money, then he could turn the Magpies into a serious candidate for trophies.
