Chelsea have decided to retain the services of Willy Caballero for one more season at least.

The Premier League club have announced on their official website that they have taken up the option to extend the 38-year-old goalkeeper’s contract.

This means that the Argentina international goalkeeper will stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of next season.

Caballero is delighted to have put pen to paper on a contract extension at Chelsea and is looking forward to carrying on for the Blues.

The goalkeeper told Chelsea’s official website: “I am very happy to make this announcement. It is a privilege to be part of this Chelsea squad and the Chelsea family, at one of the most historic clubs in the Premier League.

“It is a difficult time for everyone right now so I feel blessed by this opportunity and truly appreciate it.

“I want to thank my team-mates for helping me to be my best and I want to thank the boss and the club for extending my contract.

“I’m sure they will continue to demand the maximum from me and I will compete with the same energy as always. I am very happy.”

Chelsea Success

Caballero joined Chelsea in the summer of 2017 on a free transfer after leaving Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The Argentine was on the books of City for three seasons and could make only a handful of appearances in the Premier League for them.

Caballero was a back-up goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium, and he is playing a similar role at Chelsea.

The 38-year-old made three appearances in the Premier League for the Blues in 2017-18, two in 2018-19, and played four times in the league this season before it was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Argentine has also played once in the Champions League this campaign and played twice in the Europa League for the Blues last season.

Caballero has won the FA Cup and the Europa League with Chelsea so far.
