Italy’s Serie A clubs have voted to resume the 2019-20 season on Saturday 13 June but they’ll need to wait on approval from the Italian government.

Serie A has been suspended since early March due to the coronavirus outbreak which has led to more than 222,000 confirmed cases and 31,106 deaths in Italy.

All 20 top flight clubs met for a video call on Wednesday where 16 voted in favour of resuming the season on June 13, with the other four preferring June 20.

It’s understood the current plan is for the season to run from June 13 to August 2, with the Coppa Italia to be completed in July. Games will be played every three to four days, according to Corriere dello Sport.

“As far as the resumption of sports activities is concerned, the date of June 13 for the resumption of the championship has been indicated … in accordance with medical protocols for the protection of players and all those involved,” Serie A said in a statement.

Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora has already provided approval of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC)’s medical protocol to allow clubs to return to training on Monday 18 May.

However, one of the burning issues to resolve will be how to manage further positive coronavirus tests as part of the medical protocol.

The current protocol states that if one player tests positive then the entire squad will have to enter quarantine for 15 days, which appears unworkable with 12 rounds of Serie A matches to play in a short period of time.

Wednesday’s vote shows that Serie A clubs are determined to complete the season, despite previous rumblings from bottom club Brescia, but the medical and political complexities mean it’ll be an ongoing issue.
