Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has said that he left Liverpool a bit too early. The 28-year

The 28-year-old joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2010 for an initial transfer fee of 1.7 million pounds.

The England international was on the books of the Reds until 2013 when he switched to Swansea City.

During his time at Anfield, Shelvey had a loan spell at Blackpool, as the midfielder struggled to play regular first-team football for the Reds.

Now at Newcastle, the England international has said that he probably left Liverpool a bit too early, and that he should have stayed at the Merseyside outfit a bit longer.

Shelvey told Sky Sports about his spell at Liverpool: “I’d been on loan at Blackpool, and at Charlton I’d been obviously playing at such an early age. I don’t think that helped because you get that knack for playing games and constantly being in the team.

“When you’re playing once and then not playing for six games, I don’t care what any footballer says, you don’t feel involved. You don’t feel part of the team.

“I think that was the feeling I wanted but, in hindsight, should I have stayed? Probably, yeah. Even if it was only for another year or two, just to see how things changed. But it is what it is at the end of the day.

“Every decision I’ve made in my career was just to play, to try and get as much game-time as possible. I can’t say I’ve got too many regrets.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, Shelvey has made 16 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season, scoring five goals in the process.

The Magpies are 13th in the Premier League table at the moment with 35 points from 29 matches.

Football in England is suspended at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it is not clear when the season will resume.
