Does Thibaut Courtois Understand How Leagues Work?

This enforced break from football has thrown up some unusual opinions as people are granted extra space to think.

Now that can be dangerous, depending on the thinker, but it has all lumped us in the same boat as each other while the authorities try to sort things out.

One of the aspects of sporting life that has everyone considering is what we should do with the league system in lieu of games to play.

Already Decided

The Netherlands, Belgium and France have decided to call theirs off and award winners, or not, and losers, or not. Each one of those comes with its own problems but at least they make some sort of sense.

What Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois has suggested does not. And it begs the question: does the Belgian know what leagues are?

Maybe he’s so used to being at the top, or near enough anyone, that he hasn’t had to consider it until now.

A Great Leveller

COVID-19 has changed that.

Because the goalkeeper has asked for La Liga to be decided, not on points, but on the outcome of two games, which definitely doesn’t sound like a league to me. That sounds like a cup competition.

The Evening Standard reported that he said Real should be crowned the winners of La Liga over Barcelona because ‘we drew one match with them and we beat them in the other.’

Which would work if, you know, we were talking about a cup competition played over two legs. Maybe we could call it the Copa del Rey?

Not How It Works

But Barcelona are top of the league because they have accrued more points over the course of the season than Madrid and that is all that matters. If 2019/2020 is played to a conclusion and the results are the same, will Courtois ask for Real to be awarded the title because then? Of course he wouldn’t.

His point, about the league being too close to call right now, is a valid one. But not for the reasons that he’s arguing.
