But only on a good day.
Shelvey has had fans tearing their hair out since he burst onto the scene with Charlton Athletic in 2008 before he earned a move to Liverpool in 2010.
Plenty of Chance
Swansea City then tried to get the best out of the Londoner, who earned his England caps while living in Wales, and then Newcastle United took a chance.
Everywhere he’s gone, however, has left a slight lingering feeling of regret and unanswered promise. Now we know why, via Matt Ritchie.
Goal has reported what we all knew but never said: Jonjo Shelvey doesn’t make the most of his talent.
Will Never Change
The publication ran quotes, via Ritchie, that demonstrate the criminal waste of talent that is Shelvey and why he doesn’t seem to mind too much.
Ritchie is of the opinion that the Newcastle midfielder could play for Barcelona or Real Madrid, such is the breadth of his talent, but says Shelvey would rather hit the golf course three times a week than really apply himself.
For someone like the Scotsman, this must be the worst thing he’s ever heard. Ritchie is the hardest worker around and has squeezed the most out of every drop of ability he possesses. If Shelvey had his work ethic, there’s no knowing what would happen to him.
Frustrating
And the worst thing is that Shelvey knows he’s a slacker. But puts it down to ‘the way he is’.
It’s madness, it’s criminal and it’s the one thing that fans hate more than anything else.
It feels like such a waste of skill. There are thousands who’d give anything to be blessed with the ability that Shelvey has and would work a thousand times as hard if they were in his position.
They bleed black and white and would give anything for the club.
