Footballers Are Not Gladiators

Footballers have every right to be scared as a return to Premier League action has been mooted.

It’s been reported that the top flight might get back underway as early as June, which means players will have to get back into training weeks ahead of that time.

Despite playing games behind closed doors, matches will still need a considerable amount of people there to make sure they can go off without a hitch - and to make sure the rest of the world can get a piece of the action.

Scared

Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has spoken about his fear and said he was ‘scared’ of returning to action. Take a look through social media, and there will be an ugly minority saying that he has no right to be because of how much money he earns.

That is dead wrong.

Aguero has every right to be scared, just like every essential worker on the planet has a right to be scared. The striker isn’t an essential worker, but if the Premier League returns his health and his right to feel safe at work will be sacrificed on the alter of entertainment and that’s wrong.

Not Just About Them

These players shouldn’t be put in a position where they could take an illness home, inflect others and be a detriment to the health of those around them. Many have to care for their parents or have young children and vulnerable spouses.

The Premier League’s desire for money or our desire for something to pass the time should not supersede that.

This argument that because the players are highly paid, they should put themselves in situations they don’t want to be in is misleading, ignorant and dangerous. Don’t hate them because they’re rich, they do not owe us their health.

They Don’t Owe Us

They don’t owe us anything, actually. They don’t owe us their money, although plenty are quick to offer it up as charitable donations, and what they choose to do with a privately negotiated contract handed out by a private entity should be none of our business.

Leave the season be until it’s safe to return. These are not Roman times and these men are not gladiators, forced to fight and put themselves in danger to take the masses mind off all the shit that’s going on around them.
