The English Football League (EFL) held a video meeting on Friday with club captains, before providing an update which reiterated several of the previous messages, including their commitment to completing the 2019-20 season which has been suspended by the coronavirus outbreak.
However, the videoconference included discussion around three methods to determine promotion from the Championship, League One and League Two.
No clubs would be relegated from any of the leagues, with potentially two clubs going up by a to-be-determined method, with two additional clubs getting relegated the following season to equalise the size of competitions.
It is understood one of the proposals is for eight-team play-offs to determine promotion spots, as well as meritorious decisions, based on current ladder positions.
The EFL statement read: “In consideration of the current challenges, a variety of proposals and ideas have also been put forward by EFL Clubs in relation to operational and financial matters.
“While these contributions are welcome, it is important to emphasise that there is a range of opinion among our membership and that no decisions have been taken at this stage.”
No decisions will be made by the EFL until the government confirms plans beyond the current lockdown which is currently in place until May 7.
It remains to be seen, how any of the EFL planning will synchronise with the Premier League which is a separate body, but could need to expand to allow for promotion from the Championship, while there’s resistance around relegation from the top flight.
The EFL added: “The position of the EFL remains unchanged in that the priority is to resume the 2019/20 season as soon as it is possible with matches only returning at an appropriate point and based on guidance from the relevant authorities.
“The health and well-being of the nation has to come first.”
