The Guardian reported that the Wales international has pledged 500,000 pounds to the NHS in Cardiff and the same amount to help health care workers in Madrid, where he lives.
This comes hot on the heals of England’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock criticising footballers for not pulling their weight during the pandemic and reveals him as nothing more than a rabble-rousing tubthumper with little regard for the facts.
Shocking
Gareth Bale giving a huge amount of money follows Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and countless others who have happily handed over their well-earned cash to help the community and their country.
While Hancock used his bully pulpit to highlight the perceived injustice against the wealth earned by top flight players, he has been suspiciously silent over those earning millions at the top of the business ladder. We’ve seen precious little news stories about the generosity of CEOS and hedge fund managers - so why is there no outcry?
Hypocrisy
Where are the government ministers using the media to specifically single them out for punishment?
Put aside the fact that it should never be down to wealthy individuals to fund national health services from their own pocket, the fact that these sportsman are contributing more to society than the vultures who run business should be a source of shame to everyone involved.
A Social Conscious?
For each little bit of breaking news that passes shames companies more and more. If anything good can come out of this, hopefully it will be an increased social conscious for those who dodge taxes and employ children to make clothes and shoes so they can make disgusting profits.
But there’s more chance of Bale and Henderson and Alexander-Arnold sticking their hands in their pockets once more.
