The West Ham United manager was in charge of Everton from 2002 until 2013 before leaving for Manchester United.
The Scotsman has said that when he was at the helm at Goodison Park, he wanted to bring Essien, who is now at Sabail FK in the Azerbaijan Premier League.
Moyes said on The Keys & Gray Show: “Michael Essien. At Everton, we were really close to close to a lot of good players. We just couldn’t quite get them over the line on several occasions.”
Chelsea Great
Essien is one of the best players to have featured in the Premier League and was superb during his time at Chelsea.
The 37-year-old Ghanian midfielder joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 and was a key future in the Blues winning trophies in England and in Europe.
Essien won the Premier League title twice, the FA Cup on four occasions, and the Champions League once in 2012 during his time at Chelsea.
After playing on loan for Real Madrid in 2012-13, the midfielder moved to AC Milan on a permanent contract before turning out for Panathinaikos and Persib Bandung, and is now at Sabail FK.
