The Mexican had arranged to take some time off to be with his other half as she expects to give birth, but has cancelled those plans in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking after the 3-0 win against Melbourne Victory, head coach Ufuk Talay said: “At this stage, Uli decided not to go home and see the season out. He wants to stay, he wants to see the season off.
“He wants to finish in the best place possible that we can, it was his decision solely.”
Key Player
Davila has been in fine form for the Kiwis and leads their charts for scoring and assisting. With 13 goals and five assists this season, the former Chelsea youngster has hit the ground running during his first A-League campaign and wants to keep his run of form going.
With mandatory self-isolation for all international arrivals into New Zealand, the Mexican would have to miss more football than originally planned. That was part of the reason why Davila has chosen to cancel his trip home, Talay added: “He’s worried that if he goes (back to Mexico) and comes back he’ll lose time and will have to go into quarantine again and lose a bit more time there.”
Great Form
That 3-0 victory against Melbourne comes hot on the heels of the Nix’s 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners, a 2-0 defeat of Western United and a 1-0 triumph at home against Melbourne City.
Four wins in a row, nine goals four and only one goal against. Ulises Davila has been a key part of that and is the main man during this incredible Phoenix revival.
With a hand of 18 goal contributions in 20 league games, the Mexican has been having a phenomenal 2019/2020 and will now be available for the rest of the season.
