Liberato Cacace, Gary Hooper and Juashua Sotirio hit the back of the net for the Nix before the Mariners gave their fans something to shout about with a late consolation.
While at 2-0, Sotirio said it was important Wellington didn’t allow Central Coast a way back into the clash and decided to keep attacking. “2-0 is a bit of a funny scoreline because you can take your foot off the pedal and they can come back,” he said.
Vital
“So it was important getting the third goal and controlling the game from there.”
The win marks the Phoenix’s third in a row, and out of those three Ufuk Talay’s side have only conceded one goal. After the possible momentum-sapping break, Wellington got back on the horse in the best way possible and can take great confidence into the final run of fixtures.
Sotirio continued: “Hopefully we can build this momentum. Seven games to go, hopefully we can get as many points as we can.”
Melbourne Victory are the Kiwi’s next opponents and they face off on Sunday, before the Nix play Sydney FC on Wednesday and again the following Sunday away to Newcastle Jets. Those three results will start to give us an indication of where Wellington are going to end up when the league table concludes.
Keeping Quiet
Talay and his boys have always maintained they want to finish in the top six, but privately they must be eyeing top two or three. Reno Piscopo tends to agree with that assessment: “We wanna finish second, we want to finish first. We give it our all every week to achieve that and get the three points.
“Whatever happens, happens. If we finish second, third, if we make it to the finals that’s our main goal.”
