At least that’s what the German has told us to believe as he chatted to journalists before the Nix take on Western United on Friday night.
He was signed this summer on a 12 month deal, and while Nix head coach Ufuk Talay hasn’t brought him back to the negotiating table, Matti Steinmann believes it’s just a matter of time before things are sorted out.
Happy
He said: “I haven’t spoken to the coach for the last few weeks, but he knows I’m happy to be here and the rest will come, definitely. I’m keen to stay, I’m very happy here, I’m very happy with the style Ufey (Talay) has implemented with the team.”
The German was a first team regular before picking up a suspension and an illness which caused him to miss the last three weeks of football. That time away from the pitch took its toll on his legs, which started to tire during the final 15 minutes of the win against Melbourne City.
“I haven’t played at a good level for three weeks and I was struggling with the last minutes with my power,” added Steinmann.
It was nearly the perfect return to the Wellington midfield for him, but the player saw a goal ruled out for offside. Having his debut Phoenix strike ruled out still didn’t spoil the evening for Steinmann, who claimed he was ‘just happy to be on the pitch after suspension and illness.’
Good Combo
It’s likely that Cameron Devlin will continue alongside the German in the engine room as Talay likes to keep faith with those who are in occupation of the jersey.
And Steinmann is very happy for them to continue with their double act, saying: “Cam Devlin is doing amazing so far, he has a massive impact in our style of play and I’m very happy to play next to him.
“We are very different player types. He’s more of a no.10 and now he’s doing well as a no. 6, I think its a good combination with us. He’s very good and aggressive with the ball and I think were doing a good job.”
That combination will be working tirelessly to shut down Western United’s midfield and create chances for David Ball and Gary Hooper, who have looked sharp in recent weeks.
