The Nix may have lost 1-0 to the Brisbane Roar last weekend but that hasn’t dampened McCowatt’s spirit. “Being a part of the front four is very exciting for me. Linking up the players, you get lots of opportunities to score goals and that’s the funnest part of football - trying to score,” said the forward.
The Roar might have denied Wellington the chance to hit the back of the net, but that doesn’t mean the Kiwis lacked on the creation front. They perhaps missed star man David Ball, who was relegated to the substitutes bench after suffering a hip injury - but the team should have been able to rally in his absence.
Had the chance
“I don’t know what the stats were but we created lots of chances,” added McCowatt. “It would be a problem if we didn’t create chances and we had a dead game, but we created lots of chances and lots of shots on goal, we’ve just gotta be more clinical.”
Newcastle Jets are up next and the New South Wales outfit have been poor this season. Ball should be back to contention for a starting place - and that has McCowatt excited.
Speaking about his forward partner, the Kiwi said: “He’s very fit, he can run, he’s good on the ball, he can create chances. He’s got it all - he can score goals.”
Revenge time
After nine games unbeaten it all came tumbling down in Brisbane. The key thing now is to avoid losing two in a row and failing to capitalise on the momentum gained during the near-historic run.
With an exciting style and players who can carry it off, Talay has done excellent work so far. A win against the Jets will allow him to continue that.
