New Wellington Phoenix signing Brandon Wilson has been praised by head coach Ufuk Talay for his good character and positional versatility

Wilson joins from fellow A-League side Perth Glory on an 18-month deal, where he was only made one appearance all season.

But that hasn’t bothered Talay, who swooped for the man he worked with for the Olyroos. “He’s a top kid and a good professional and hell add value to the team,” said the gaffer.

With 47 career appearances under his belt, Wilson is the type of young professional Wellington are collecting in order to build for the future.

For now and the future

“We’re bringing in young, talented players who have the ambition and drive to be successful and he fitted in to that mould quite easily,” added Talay. Wilson will be competing for a place in the side with established first team professionals Alex Rufer and Matti Steinmann as well as Cameron Devlin, who has started the last four in a row and is impressing.

But this doesn’t bother the Burnley youth product, who said the strength in depth will drive the squad to bigger and better things. “Competition is good. We’ll all push each other and pushing for a spot makes you better,” said Wilson.

Talay has got his team playing entertaining football, with an emphasis on working hard off the ball and pressing aggressively. They are also in the midst of an eight game unbeaten spell - which could turn to double figures thanks to a few easier matches in January.

Good man

“It’s very attractive, the way they’ve (Wellington) have been playing, and their style,” added Wilson. “Obviously the way Ufuk’s implemented his style is massive.”

But the Botswana born midfielder wouldn’t be at the club if he wasn’t, essentially, a good bloke. Talay has placed a huge emphasis on the character of his players and we’ve heard good noises from the dressing room about squad unity.

“For me, first and foremost, with all the players we’ve signed in this season we look at their character first and then what type of footballer they are,” said the gaffer.

He fits both moulds for us and hell be a great addition.
