The winner of the 2010 FIFA Golden Ball award for Best Player at the Soccer World Cup in South Africa will debut as a coach with Penarol.
Back in August, Forlan announced his decision to end a successful 21-year career as a professional football player.
Among his greatest achievements is the Premier League he won with Manchester United, the Europa League with Atletico de Madrid (2010), and the Copa America (2011) title for Uruguay.
Club Atletico Penarol is a major Uruguayan football team, founded in 1891.
In 2013, German magazine "[[Sport magazine</a>” classified Penarol as one of the 40 legendary football clubs of all time.
“Having the opportunity to start in such a big team is an important challenge, and also a great joy,” Forlan said after being officially introduced by the team authorities.
Forlan (40) has signed a one year contract with the team, which is one of the sides qualified for the 2020 edition of the CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup, considered the most important South American football cup.
In its Group Stage, the team will play against three teams, Colo Colo from Chile, Atletico Paranaense from Brazil, and a team from Bolivia, yet to be confirmed.
Sports Pundit spoke to Rudy Barreto, one of the many fans of the team, who said: “It is great news to have Diego Forlan as the team manager.
He has given us many joys as a football player, so did his father (also a former football player), when playing for the “aurinegro.”
I wish him the best of luck in his debut as coach of Uruguay’s best football team.”
Penarol traditional rival, Nacional, won the 2019 Uruguayan Championship against the “Carboneros” in a match last Sunday, which resulted in former manager Diego Lopez and the team to part ways.
