It was a lively start with both teams creating chances until Leicester thought they had taken the lead when a long-range shot from Youri Tielemans was spilled by Paolo Gazzinga in the Tottenham goal, and the ball was scrambled home by Wilfried Ngidi. However, it was ruled out for offside by VAR. Then Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko was lucky to stay on the field after a strong challenge on James Maddison, which the referee deemed worthy of only a yellow, whilst the crowd were baying for red.
It was though the visitors who took the lead when Harry Kane collected a back heel from Son Heung-Min, stumbled and, whilst lying on the floor, somehow scooped the ball over the head of the keeper and into the net.
Tottenham went into half-time a goal to the good, and, midway through the second-half, thought they had added a second when right-back Serge Aurier collected the ball in the centre of the goal, and stroked the ball home. However, VAR controversially ruled the goal out because Son was adjudged millimetres offside in the build-up, and Spurs paid for that three minutes later, when Leicester right-back Ricardo Pereira slotted home at the far post after good work from Jamie Vardy.
Fatigue began to show for Spurs who had travelled to Greece in the Champions League in mid-week to play Olympiakos. And they fell behind with five minutes to go when James Maddison picked the ball up twenty-yards out and rifled a low shot into the bottom corner. The visitors rarely threatened after that, and Leicester saw the match out comfortably.
Manchester City handed Watford the second-ever biggest thrashing in Premier League history, beating the Hertfordshire team 8 – 0 at the Etihad.
City took only a minute to take the lead against the bottom side, Kevin de Bruyne bending a ball into the six yard box for David Silva to stick out a leg and prod the ball home. Four minutes later it was two, de Bruyne slipped Riyad Mahrez into the box, he was brought down and Sergio Aguero converted from the penalty box.
Then Mahrez himself got on to the scoresheet, when his free-kick diverted off Tom Cleverley and wrong-footed Ben Foster in the Watford goal. And with less than 15 minutes on the clock it was four, woeful defending allowing Bernardo Sllva to score from four yards with no defender near him. It was soon five, Nicolas Otamendi tapping home after a cross from Aguero, who then clipped a shot wide, and hit a post.
It took City until three minutes after half-time, before the two Silvas combined, David and Bernardo, before Bernardo poked it home from close range. He then got his hat-trick after he was played in by Mahrez. Five minutes from time de Bruyne got the eighth, the best of the lot, firing home from 16 yards, and then missed the chance to equal the record, pulling his shot wide after a mazy dribble.
